Located on a dramatic cliff edge in the eastern Oregon desert, this
proposed design echoes the severity of the harsh volcanic landscape while
connecting to the mountain range directly across the canyon.
The large, lightweight wing-like cantilevered roof protects the
transparent view side from summer sun while the entry facade is mostly
opaque, clad in site found volcanic rock. This side of the residence pulls
the inside out with carefully made apertures of light providing privacy while
carefully crafting the quality of the rooms within. The dialog of heavy and
light - smooth and rough is clearly explored all in natural materials layered
one over the other creating a rich, warm environment that connects and
contrast to the nature of this unique site.
