This program includes twelve new classrooms, new stage/cafeteria, band, music and art spaces on three levels. The steeply sloped site was ideal for a compact three-story classroom cluster that winds around a mid-level interior courtyard that is wrapped by the large elective classrooms reflecting the one story scale of the existing adjacent structure.
Natural light is provided by clerestory windows illuminating all of the inner volumes, minimizing energy needs as well as making both buildings inspiring spaces in which to learn.
This project also includes a new ten thousand square foot gymnasium made of tilt up concrete and tensile compression long span construction. These new buildings form a new entrance completing the new campus while capturing a new courtyard social space between the old and the new.
The modernist vocabulary brings a new vitality similar to the 1960 structures without creating a totally new aesthetic. The sculptural elements such as the canopies, roof and sun screens are made of lightweight metal panel construction contrasting with the tilt-up concrete and concrete block of the primary walls.
