This privately run Art Gallery is part of a larger residential space which
is located next to and over the gallery space connected by a large moveable
travertine stone wall. The volume of the gallery keeps its 1910 vintage structure of
exposed wood timbers, steel beams and brick walls while the new design
elements are carefully inserted into this long narrow space. The new
elements are new recycled old timber wood floors, interlocking wood display
walls, Mexican travertine and a new all-translucent clad glass ADA bathroom
that is pulled away from the walls forming a glowing "ice cube" volume within the space. As holds true for the entire composition, the Art
Gallery is a thoughtfully made intervention into the industrial historic
beginnings of Portland.
